Glossop Amateur Swimming Club

Manchester & District Division 1 Swimming Champions 2010

Who would have thought, 12 months after Glossopís promotion into Manchester & Districtís Division 1 Swimming League they would finish as overall 2010 champions, a feat never before achieved in the history of the club!!

Glossopís road to victory started in the best possible way with a huge victory at Swinton, beating their nearest rivals by 34 points. The whole team was on fire, winning the majority of the races in the Gala.Thinking the Swinton gala may have been a stroke of luck the team went into the next event at home more cautiously, especially as they were meeting the current champions Bolton for the first time. Bolton, a formidable team, had held the league trophy for four years so this event was not going to be easy. Again the Glossop teamís performance proved too much, even for Bolton, pushing them into second place in the Gala.

Next event on the calendar was Worsley. With the North West Regional Championships the same weekend, the Glossop team lost a number of its older swimmers for this event. However, Glossop still managed to put out a good team on the day and pushed Horwich all the way to the end of the Gala finishing a close second.

The final event for Glossop took them to Bolton where again they would have to swim against the current champions, as well as a now, on form, Horwich. The event was the best yet with Glossop and Bolton battling it out right down to the last race, with Glossop just winning the event. The league for Glossop was now over but Bolton and Horwich, the only teams that could beat Glossop, still had one more league event. The tension built on the day as Glossop waited for the results; a win for Bolton with more than 126 points would mean Glossop would lose the Championship. To Glossopís relief Bolton only managed 113 points making Glossop 2010 Division 1 champions!!

The presentation was held at Broughton Pool; team captains Chloe Fletcher and Joseph Mitchell collected the shield on behalf of the club.
